Protocol for Instant Messenger Class Project--October 23, 2000

Welcome to the first attempt at conducting this class via instant messenger.  Below are the protocol that we will follow regarding this activity.  Obviously, since this is a new attempt variations may need to take place as we proceed.

First, at 6:45 pm on Monday, October 23, log onto the internet and boot up your instant messenger program.

Second, once logged in, send an instant message to 'siuchedir'

Hopefully, within seconds you will receive a memo from me to join me in a chatroom.  You should be able to click and go directly to that chatroom.  There, you will see an array of strange and exotic names...each representing a person.  You may chat back and forth for a few minutes...we will start class at 6:50 pm.  Before the class officially starts, please open up a browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and a spreadsheet.  Then go to http://www.kittle.siu.edu/course/hed489/im/mathinexcel_files/v3_document.htm and review how one can complete math problems in excel.

To avoid confusion, I will direct all conversations.

In many instances I will direct a particular person to respond.  When that takes place, please do not respond until that person does.  If you are the selected person, you will have a few seconds to give your answer.  If you don't know, simply type 'don't know'.  I will then proceed to ask another person.

In some instances I will send you to a particular web page to find something.   After finding what it is hold until I ask for a response.  Don't respond back 'I found it', unless you were directed to.

Many times I will refer you back to the web page of this particular week.   You may want to bookmark it for easy location.
